Katherine and Bianca are two sisters navigating a world dictated by the will of men. When their father sets an ultimatum to Katherine – a free-spirited and romantically uninvolved woman – that she must settle down to marry before her lovestruck sister will be allowed to, tensions explode.
This year, Arden Professional Apprentice Class 31 is working with a local playwright to develop a new play, showcasing the talents of artists in Philadelphia! We’re developing The Freeing of the Bird, alongside an emerging local artist Ronnie Hernandez. His play is a contemporary adaptation/re-telling of The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, and takes a critical look at the gender roles in the original story.
Contains mature themes, such as gendered violence and harsh language.
