Play-in-a-Day for Grades K-5
In these award-winning classes, students work together on their day off from school to create an original play. Each Play-in-a-Day is as unique as the participants – the story and characters are always new!
All Play in a Days are for Grades K-5 and are held from 9am-5pm* for $85 per session.
*December 31st Play-in-a-day will end at 4pm
Terms and Conditions: Included in the cost of your Play In A Day class is a $25 non-refundable deposit. If you need to cancel enrollment, you must notify us in writing no later than two weeks before the start of class in order to receive a refund. One Day Workshops for Grades 6 – 12
These workshops are great way to explore a new theatrical skill without the pressure of performance or add a brand new tool to their actor’s toolkit. Students will spend the day with one of our professional teaching artists focusing on a special topic ranging from musical theatre styles to character study to playwrighting to design.
Grades 6-8 Workshops are held from 10:00am – 1:00pm

Stage Combat

Acting: Create a Play!
January 10 – February 28, 2026
This storytelling focused class invites young students to work together to create their own play with a beginning, middle, and end. Students will apply their actor’s tools to create characters and build the world of the play that they will perform together helping them to learn to share and collaborate!
Students will:
- Learn the basics of theatrical storytelling including terms like props, set, and director
- Use their actor’s tools to create and perform their own play with a clear beginning, middle, and end
- Grow in sharing and collaboration

This fun-filled class invites young performers to explore the joy of singing with their favorite Broadway songs! Through engaging vocal warm-ups, fun games, and group singing, students will develop their voices and learn the basics of musical performance.

- Learn basic vocal techniques like pitch, rhythm, and breath control
- Explore how to use their voice to express different emotions and characters
- Build confidence in singing and performing in front of others as an ensemble

Get ready to move and groove! This energetic, dance-focused class introduces young students to the fun world of musical theatre choreography. With easy-to-learn, age-appropriate dance routines set to lively music, students will develop coordination, rhythm, and confidence. Whether they’re tapping their toes to a Broadway tune or dancing like a character from Disney, this class is all about using movement to tell a story and have fun!

Actor’s Toolbox: Creating Characters
January 10 – February 28, 2026
This character-building class invites students to dive deep into the process of creating original characters. With creative acting exercises and games, students will learn how to develop characters that are engaging and complex. Students create and perform short scenes in character, gaining insight into storytelling through the lens of character development.
Students will:
- Learn basic theatre terms like objective, obstacle, and backstory
- Explore movement, voice work, and imaginative play to bring characters to life
- Collaborate with peers to build short scenes centered around their characters

In this high-energy class, students will explore musical theatre dance styles, and it is a perfect introduction for all levels who want to have fun and grow their stage presence. With an emphasis on expression, rhythm, and character, students will learn choreography inspired by Broadway musicals and practice moving with confidence and style.

- Learn musical theatre and dance vocabulary and choreography

In this exciting and BRAND-NEW class, students will work together to write, build, and perform their very own original play. From brainstorming ideas to creating characters, students will experience the full process of bringing a story to life on stage. Along the way, they’ll build confidence, learn structure, and collaborate as an ensemble.
Students will:
- Learn the fundamentals of play structure including plot, character, conflict, and dialogue
- Collaborate to create and perform an original play with a beginning, middle, and end
- Grow in creativity, communication, and ensemble-based storytelling

Actor’s Workshop: Scene Study
January 10 – February 28, 2026
In this collaborative class, students will learn the techniques to take a scene from the page to the stage. Through script analysis and partner exercises, students will discover how to use objectives, tactics, and beats to bring energy to a scene. Students will work together on classic and contemporary scripts as they explore dynamic staging choices.
Students will:
- Learn the basics of script analysis
- Discover how units and beats can build depth in a scene
- Strengthen collaboration and rehearsal skills through scene partner work

Musical Theatre: Duets

In this class, students will work together to create engaging scenes through song. Working on duets from classic and contemporary musical theatre, students will explore how tactics add energy and character to their singing. Acting Lab: The Creative Performer
January 10 – February 28, 2026
Inspired by the new work the Arden debuts on its stages each season, this class will challenge young artists and actors to develop and perform new plays using various devising techniques. Guided by a professional director, students will explore dynamic theatrical movement exercises, advanced text analysis, and collaborative theatre making. Students will collaborate on devising a new theatre piece that explores topics that are meaningful to them that they will perform after the final rehearsal. Students receive a complimentary ticket to Teen Night for Good Bones, a new play by Pulitzer Prize winner James Ijames.
Students will:
- Learn and explore various theatrical devising techniques
- Practice developing new work through hands on acting exercises
- Begin to discover their unique artistic voice

Musical Theatre: Scene into Song

There’s a lot more to musical theatre than singing and dancing and this advanced class will immerse students in the skills needed to be considered a ‘triple threat.” Guided by musical theatre professionals, students will explore the character and story development techniques that take a scene into song. Students will strengthen their vocal technique and practice dynamic movement as they dive deeper into the musical theatre rehearsal process.

- Learn advanced techniques to portray character and story through singing and movement
- Explore the storytelling strategies that make musical theatre unique

Design Camp
July 6-10 (One Week Camp)
In this creative camp, theatre professionals teach students how costumes, props, set, lights, and sound help bring a story to life on stage. Students will learn the basics of the theatrical design process and then put those skills into practice on a show of their choice!
Students will:
- Learn basic design principles for costume, props, set, lights, and sound
- Work together to design a show or musical
- Learn how to support each other and give constructive feedback

Comedy Camp: Improv!
July 20-24 (One Week Camp)
Students think on their feet as they practice short and long form improv exercises. Camp culminates in an improv comedy show for friends and family.
Students will:
- Learn the basics of improv and comedic acting
- Practice creating their own humorous characters and scenes
- Build confidence and collaboration

Musical Theatre Camp: Broadway Bound
July 27-31 (One Week Camp)
5, 6, 7, 8! Students will feel like musical theatre stars as they work on songs and choreography from their favorite Broadway shows in this classic week of Arden Summer Camp. Throughout the week, musical theatre professionals will teach students how to boldly take the stage and connect story to lyrics.

Comedy Camp: Sketch
August 3-7 (One Week Camp)
Students imagine silly characters and create hilarious original scenes as they practice various sketch writing and performance skills.

Musical Theatre Camp: Showstoppers!
August 17-21 (One Week Camp)

August 24-28 (One Week Camp)
Get ready to take the stage! In this camp, students will work with a theatre director to rehearse and perform a scripted play by the end of the week. Students will learn the fundamentals of blocking, character development, and what it means to rehearse a play.

In this fun masterclass, students will learn to think on their feet and act without a script. Guided by a theatre professional, students will practice advanced improv and sketch techniques to create complex characters and comedic scenes on the fly.

Musical Theatre: Song Styles
Tuesday, June 23rd
In this class, students explore different styles of musical theatre, from classical Broadway to contemporary hits, and even Disney and pop musicals. As they work on different performance techniques specific to each style, they’ll learn how to adapt their voices and acting to match.
Students will:
- Understand and perform songs in various musical theatre styles (e.g., classic Broadway, pop musicals, etc.).
- Experiment with different vocal techniques and character choices for each style
- Gain confidence and self-awareness

Character Development
Wednesday, June 24th
In this engaging masterclass, students dive into the process of creating characters from the inside out. Students learn to break down text to uncover a character’s motivations, emotions, and relationships—all while discovering how to bring their own truth and individuality to the role.
Students will:
- Analyze dramatic text to uncover key elements such as objectives, obstacles, subtext, and given circumstances
- Explore using actor’s tools to connect to material and “own” your performance
- Build confidence and empathy

Dance Call
Thursday, June 25th
In this high energy masterclass, students will learn how to slay their musical theatre dance audition. Guided by a musical theatre professional, students will learn combinations and choreography as they practice technique and precision.
Students will:
- Practice advanced musical theatre combinations
- Learn how to convey story and character through movement
- Gain confidence and self-awareness

Stage Combat
Friday, June 26th
Put ‘em up, put ‘em up! In this energetic class, students learn the basics of stage combat. They’ll practice the mechanics of several hand-to-hand moves and then work collaboratively to create fight choreography that tells the story.
Students will:
- Learn the basic mechanics for hand-to-hand combat on stage
- Practice safely conveying story through stage combat
- Work on collaboration and compromise

The Arden Summer Studio provides exclusive access to classes taught by Philadelphia’s top theatre artists. During Studio weeks, students will deepen their theatre skills, explore their individual creativity, and collaborate with their fellow artists in creating a compelling final showcase on the Arcadia Theatre stage for family and friends.

Acting Studio: From Page to Stage
July 6-17 (Two Week Studio)
In this thoughtful two-week studio experience, students will develop as actors and performers through devising, scene study, and performance. In their first week, students will practice a variety advanced character development techniques. In the second week, the students will apply what they learned in the first week to monologues and scenes that they will present to family and friends on the Arden mainstage.
Students will:
- Learn advanced acting techniques for developing character and working with objectives and obstacles in a scene
- Build stage presence while working on monologues, scripted, and devised scenes
- Build confidence and self esteem

Comedy Studio: Friday Afternoon Live!
July 20-24 (One Week Studio)
It’s Friday Afternoon Live! In this comical studio, quick-witted students will learn to create humorous characters and riotous scenes. Led by theatre professionals, students will work together to create sketches and stand-up routines that they’ll share with friends and family on the Arden mainstage.
Students will:
- Practice advanced improv and sketch development techniques
- Learn how to edit and revise comedic routines from feedback
- Develop creative problem-solving skills

Musical Theatre Studio: Dancing Through Life
July 27-August 7 (Two Week Studio)
In this toe-tapping studio, students will develop as musical theatre performers through solos, duets, and group numbers. Working with a classic and contemporary Broadway repertoire, students will practice supporting their voice while conveying story through choreography. The studio will culminate in a revue style showcase for friends and family on the Arden mainstage.
Students will:
- Practice vocal technique while working on songs from a broad range of classic and contemporary Broadway songs
- Develop as musical theatre performers while working with complex choreography
- Build confidence and self-awareness

Shakespeare Studio
August 10-14 (One Week Studio)
Double double toil and trouble….student actors conjure theatre magic in this Shakespearean studio. Led by a classical acting professional, students will explore how to interpret Shakespeare’s text for a modern audience. They will put classical acting techniques into practice as they rehearse and perform a cut of one of Shakespeare’s iconic plays on the Arden mainstage.
Students will:
- Learn how to interpret Shakespeare’s text for a modern audience
- Practice classical acting techniques through the rehearsal and performance
- Develop stage presence and point of view

Design Studio: Behind the Scenes
August 17-21 (One Week Studio)
In this hands-on class, students explore the world of theatrical design, focusing on set, costume, prop, and lighting design. Through practical exercises and creative projects, they will learn how design elements contribute to storytelling on stage and discover the basics of the technical side of theatre.
Students will:
- Develop an understanding of how set, costumes, lighting, and props support a production’s themes and story.
- Experiment with creating design concepts, from sketches to models
- Present original design ideas and receive peer feedback to improve their craft
