When the COVID lock down went into effect last year I felt confused, scared and numb. What was going to happen to the arts? Would we be able to be in the same room together again? This became a reflective year for me as I looked back at how the arts influenced me. I think I speak for many artists when I say, we miss working.
This year brought a lot of challenges for everyone. Socially, politically and emotionally. The injustices faced by Black people, immigrants and Asian Americans are only a few of the many challenges this country continues to face. My way of finding peace and serenity is by playing the piano and singing. So I took to my music this year more than ever before and found solace in it; a solace I hope I am able to share with you today.
When Terry Nolen reached out asking if I would do a concert as part of their cabaret series, I had to say yes! I was at a point where I needed to find a connection with the theatre and with audiences again. This concert went through a few evolutions to get to where it is today and I am incredibly excited to show you all what we created.
There is a responsibility that comes with being an artist, a responsibility I am still working to achieve, and that is to imagine, create and develop good challenging ideas. Ideas that can become plays, movies, paintings, dance pieces, you name it. Ideas that represent America as it really is and how it can become the America we all deserve. My hope with this concert is to help bring more stories that represent not only the Latinx community but all marginalized communities to the Philadelphia stages and beyond. I remain hopeful that theatre is coming back stronger than ever and that soon we all will be able to celebrate it in person again.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and enjoy the show!
